Finding the Right Fit at Sierra School of Gateway

Karla first visited Sierra School of Gateway a year ago during her search for a school. She wanted a place where her son Diego could learn and feel supported in every way-academically, socially, and emotionally.

“Diego had a great kindergarten experience,” Karla said. “But at the beginning of first grade, he wasn’t doing well in school. We toured many other schools to find the right fit, and Gateway stood out as the right choice for our family.”

“I liked that the classes were small, the kids looked happy and comfortable, and the staff I met were so friendly,” she said. “That really stood out to me.”

Since then, Karla has become a vital part of the school’s community.

“Not only has she supported Diego’s learning, but she has also left her mark on Gateway – literally,” said Jessica Gilmore, director of Sierra School of Gateway.

During a conference day visit, Karla overheard another parent mention that a mural would brighten the school’s new calming space. An artist at heart, she volunteered her time and talent to make it happen.

“This project was so rewarding because I knew the kids would enjoy it,” she said. “While painting, I saw how the staff interacted with each other and the kids. They really care, they protect our kids, and even when things aren’t easy, they never lose their cool.”

Her mural now brings color and energy to the school’s walls, but her biggest contribution has been her presence.

“I’ve seen tears of happiness, sadness, and worry here, and I can tell you, none of it is fake,” Karla said. “The love this team has for these kids is real. My family and I are so happy to have found this community.”

Gilmore said

“Karla’s involvement shows the power of families and staff working together. Karla reminds us that Gateway is a special place where families, students, and staff come together to fuel success.”
