Miles’ Journey at Sierra School of San Diego

A Student Journey at Sierra School of San Diego
When Miles first arrived at Sierra School of San Diego, his teacher, Anton Cujec, immediately recognized his tremendous potential and knew individualized support would help him thrive. Miles, now an alumnus, left the school with more confidence, skills, and a strong sense of community. Which is a transformation Cujec reflects on with pride, noting how far Miles has come since his first days at Sierra.
Finding Support and Structure at Sierra School of San Diego
At his previous school, Miles struggled with his behavior and focus. Once Miles realized he was surrounded by peers like himself and teachers who cared for and were ready to support him, he quickly discovered that Sierra School was somewhere he could feel comfortable and engage with learning.
Building Confidence in the Classroom
In Cujec’s classroom, sitting in the back and not paying attention wasn’t an option. Miles readily understood classroom expectations and immersed himself in school. He was open to feedback and quick to pick up the actions his teacher modeled. Over time, he began to see mistakes not as failures, but as part of the learning process.
“He would be very frustrated at first, especially with math, but kept going,” Cujec said. “So much of his confidence has developed and motivated him to keep learning and to keep doing hard things.”
Growth Beyond Academics
There were countless moments when Cujec saw the lessons take root, academically, socially, and emotionally.
“There were a lot of moments where Miles, we could see the things we were teaching him and what he was learning – he was repeating the language we used,” said Cujec. “Sometimes he sounded like a teacher … super positive. There were times in the classroom when his peers would be having a hard time, and he would offer support.”
Leadership and Confidence at Sierra School of San Diego
Described by his teachers as passionate, empathetic, and self-motivated to succeed, Miles’ growth extended far beyond academics. He’s a go-getter who is always eager to try new things. Over time, he became a leader in the classroom, “almost like a social glue,” as Cujec put it.
A Family Reflects on Miles’ Progress
In an email to the leadership team, Miles’ family shared:
“For 2.5 years, students and staff at Sierra have been Miles’ true and supportive community, and we couldn’t have gotten him to this point without the wonderful dedication and care of everyone there, especially Mr. Cujec and his team of teachers and support…
Most importantly, Miles is finishing his school days with dignity and confidence and the lifelong belief that he can accomplish anything he puts his mind to. That is a direct result of your excellent program and caring teachers and staff.”
Life After Sierra School of San Diego
Since graduating from Sierra School of San Diego, Miles is taking his talents to the next level. This March, he will begin at a local program where adults with special needs can learn animation, video editing, and other digital art skills. With his creativity, confidence, and dedication, he’s ready to continue building both his skillset and his community.
Miles’ growth and graduation speak to what Sierra School of San Diego is designed to give students the support and structure they need to succeed in and out of the classroom.
