Sierra School of Gilbert Students Build Workplace Skills

Every week, students in the Sierra School of Gilbert Secondary Spark class put lessons into practice at local businesses and community organizations.
Through partnerships with Matthew’s Crossing Food Bank and Sal’s Gilbert Pizza, students gain experience in workplace settings. They also develop skills that can support greater independence after graduation.
Building Workplace Skills Through Community Partnerships
At Matthew’s Crossing Food Bank, students assemble food packages for local families. They practice following directions, task completion, and working alongside others.
At Sal’s Gilbert Pizza, students help with cleaning and food preparation before the restaurant opens. These experiences introduce workplace routines, sanitation practices, and completing tasks over an extended period.
“Our goal is to give students practical skills they can take straight into the community and workplace,” said Matthew Drowne, director, Sierra School of Gilbert. “Partners like Matthew’s Crossing Food Bank and Sal’s Gilbert Pizza offer invaluable real-world training that transforms student confidence.”
Preparing Students for Life After Graduation
The weekly outings are part of the school’s transition programming. They give students regular opportunities to apply what they are learning at school.
Working at community job sites helps students practice communicating with supervisors, following workplace expectations, and navigating different environments with greater confidence.
Sierra School of Gilbert is working to develop additional community partnerships. These opportunities can expose students to different types of jobs and help prepare them for employment after graduation.
