Buddies Group Builds Community at Sierra School of Gilbert

A Program Designed to Motivate and Connect Students
Students at Sierra School of Gilbert participate in a variety of incentives and rewards that encourage them to do their best each day. This year, the school introduced a Buddies Group designed to bring students from different classes together, including students with a range of intellectual and developmental abilities. The group focuses on creating meaningful connections while reinforcing positive behaviors in a supportive setting.
Learning Through Real World Experiences
As part of the Buddies Group, several students were rewarded for having a strong week with a community outing to a nearby Circle K. During the visit, students practiced socially appropriate behavior in a public store setting. They took turns, waited in line, and completed purchases independently while following expectations. Big Buddies supported their partners throughout the outing, helping them navigate the experience and encouraging cooperation.
Strengthening Skills Beyond the Classroom
This outing supported important skill development while building a sense of community within the school. By connecting students with familiar neighborhood resources, the experience helps families generalize skills when visiting public places outside of school. Community safety, communication, and cooperation were all essential for a successful outing, and students demonstrated these skills throughout the visit.
While the drinks were a fun reward, students especially enjoyed spending time off campus together and building new friendships. Experiences like this reinforce daily effort, promote social growth, and help students apply what they learn in school to real-world environments.
