Sierra School at Krum Builds an Inclusive School Community

Sierra School at Krum students recently teamed up with students from Krum ISD’s 18+ program, EMBRACE, for an apple bar activity that brought the programs together for an afternoon of hands-on learning.

Putting Job Skills Into Practice

As part of their job-skills training, EMBRACE students planned, prepared, and served fresh apples with toppings including caramel, chocolate chips, sprinkles, granola and whipped cream. From preparing the food to serving their Sierra peers, EMBRACE students put workplace skills into practice in a real-world setting.

Building an Inclusive School Community

For Sierra students, the apple bar offered a chance to connect with their peers from across the district while practicing social and communication skills in a fun, welcoming setting. The partnership also gave students from both programs a chance to learn alongside one another and become more familiar with the broader school community.

Learning Through Meaningful Connections

“Our Sierra Panthers had the opportunity to interact with their peers, practice social and communication skills, demonstrate patience and respect, and experience firsthand what it means to be part of an inclusive school community,” said Dr. Lasonia Russell, Sierra School at Krum school director. “What may have looked like a simple apple bar represented something much bigger: students learning from students, practicing real-world skills, building confidence, and creating meaningful connections.”
