Student Leadership Success Begins With Support

Jalaya W. has been a part of the Excel Academy of Roseland community since August 2024. When she first joined, she faced several personal challenges that made school difficult. But with determination, support from teachers, and meaningful relationships with classmates, Jalaya found her footing and began to thrive.

Leadership Growth Through School Community Involvement

Through her resilience and commitment, Jalaya has grown into a positive and influential member of the school community. She joined the student government, where she has demonstrated leadership by helping fellow students, supporting staff, and encouraging others to stay on track. Her journey reflects the power of perseverance, self-growth, and embracing the support of a community that believes in you.

Achieving Graduation and Academic Milestones

One of Jalaya’s proudest accomplishments is earning her place as a December 2025 graduate. She overcame struggles in her junior year, refocused on her studies, and built strong connections with staff. Members such as Ms. Brooks, Ms. Brown, and Mr. Chapman, whose guidance helped her succeed.

“I’ve seen tremendous growth in Jalaya over the past two years. She’s faced challenges head-on and come out stronger, and I’m proud to have been part of her journey,” said Gerald Chapman, director of student services at Excel Academy of Roseland.

Developing Skills Beyond the Classroom

Outside the classroom, Jalaya is also a talented cook, specializing in dishes like shrimp Alfredo and cabbage, a skill she honed through her culinary classes.

Preparing for the Future Through Student Leadership Success

Looking ahead, Jalaya is excited to continue her education at Malcolm X College, where she will study nursing and complete a phlebotomy program. Inspired by her family members in healthcare and her love for helping children, she hopes to become a nurse and make a meaningful impact in the medical field.

Student Leadership Success That Inspires Others

Reflecting on her time at Excel Academy of Roseland, Jalaya encourages younger students to persevere, stay focused, and “be the bigger person,” advice she wishes she could have given her younger self. Her growth and determination have made her a source of pride for her family, friends, and the entire Chicago Excel community.

We celebrate Jalaya’s accomplishments and are excited to see the incredible things she will achieve in her next chapter.
