More Than One Path to Greatness

A Nontraditional Education Path to Success
By Christopher Johns, High Road School of Philadelphia-Germantown Class of 2026
My story proves there is more than one path to success.
I attended High Road School of Philadelphia-Germantown, and while my educational journey was different from the traditional route, I was blessed with the opportunity to play football at Edison High School. Competing there gave me the platform to showcase my hard work, dedication, and love for the game. That experience helped me earn a football scholarship and take an important step toward my future.
Hard Work and Dedication on a Different Path
My journey was not always easy, but I stayed focused and kept believing in myself. Football became proof that your path does not have to look like everyone else’s for you to succeed. Through hard work and dedication, I was fortunate to receive 17 offers during the recruiting process. Out of all of them, North Dakota State College of Science felt like the right place for me.
Building Opportunities Through Connection
My relationship with North Dakota State College of Science began on X (previously Twitter), where I first connected with the coach. Later, I had the opportunity to meet him in person, and continued building the relationship, which ultimately led to a scholarship offer. The opportunity meant a lot to me because it showed that all the sacrifices and effort I put into the game were worthwhile.
Growth Beyond Comfort Zones
My parents are very proud of my decision, and their support has meant everything. In August, I will begin the next chapter of my life at North Dakota State College of Science. While I am excited, I am also nervous about being away from home, because Philadelphia is all I have known. Still, I understand that growth comes from stepping outside of your comfort zone.
Looking Ahead on a Nontraditional Education Path
This opportunity is a blessing, but I know it is only the beginning. My ultimate goals are to continue developing as a student and an athlete and gain the chance to play Division I football. I am grateful for my journey, proud of how far I have come, and ready for everything ahead.
I hope my story inspires others to believe in themselves, because a nontraditional path can still lead to success.
