Mason’s Journey of Student Growth at BEST Academy
Mason joined B.E.S.T. Academy shortly after the school returned from its COVID closure. When he first arrived, he faced significant challenges with self-regulation and had a limited ability to communicate. Over time, Mason began to make steady progress through the dedication and collaboration of BEST Academy’s multidisciplinary team.
Supporting Self-Regulation and Communication
With the introduction of sensory breaks, Mason gradually learned how to regulate himself and prepare for learning. Sensory supports such as chewelry and headphones helped him spend increased time in the classroom. As his regulation improved, Mason also began using a communication device to share his wants and needs.
Mason’s progress continued over the years as he strengthened both his independence and communication skills. He now uses his device not only for academics, but also for daily functional communication, reflecting meaningful student growth at BEST Academy.
Increased Independence and Daily Participation
With continued support from his team, family, and outside resources, Mason learned how to use a variety of sensory tools to help him stay regulated. While he encountered significant behavioral challenges along the way, Mason’s persistence and the supportive environment at BEST Academy made a real difference.
As of January 2026, Mason has shown remarkable improvements. His behavioral challenges have significantly decreased, and he now actively participates in academic rotations and group activities. Mason arrives each day with a smile, eager to learn, and enjoys drawing with the staff or playing the keyboard.
His hard work and positive attitude were recognized when he was voted Student of the Month in January.
A February Spotlight Worth Celebrating
BEST Academy is incredibly proud of Mason and all he has accomplished. His journey highlights the importance of perseverance, teamwork, and consistent support in helping students grow.
