Susan Konareski Marks 17 Years of Dedication

A Career of Dedication and Growth
When Susan Konareski joined the High Road School of Wallingford Primary in 2008, she didn’t know she was beginning a 17-year journey of purpose and pride. At the time, the school hadn’t even opened. She started as a one-to-one aide during the Extended School Year program, an experience that gave her a deep understanding of the heart of special education.
“Being a one-to-one really opened my eyes to the entire company,” Konareski said. “I have so much respect for anyone who works in the classroom. Even though I don’t work directly with students anymore, they all know who I am. That experience taught me a lot about who we are and what we value.”
From Classroom Support to Regional Leadership
In 2013, school leadership promoted Konareski to head administrative assistant, supporting staff and directors across multiple schools in New England. Her guidance, organization, and calm under pressure made her indispensable to the team.
Steadfast Through Challenges
When the pandemic hit in 2020, Konareski stayed on campus every day to ensure operations continued smoothly. She jokes that she’s amassed “36 sick days” because she rarely calls out.
“I give 100% every day,” Konareski said. “I love what our schools stand for and love to brag about them. I’m proud to be part of it.”
Her dedication earned her another promotion in 2022, this time to regional administrative assistant. Today, she oversees operations for nine schools and several in-district classroom programs across Connecticut and Massachusetts. Based in the Wallingford regional office, Konareski helps ensure smooth administrative operations and consistency across schools, all while mentoring other admins and visiting schools twice a week.
Gary Hunt, M.Ed., regional vice president for New England at Specialized Education Services, Inc., called Konareski “a fantastic person who reflects all the good things here in New England.”
“I meet with Gary all the time, and he listens to me,” Konareski said. “The leadership team has always had my back. I love this company and what it stands for, and I feel respected and supported. That’s why I’ve stayed.”
Leading With Heart and Collaboration
Konareski’s pride in her work and team runs deep. “We all make up a team and work together,” she said. “I couldn’t do this without all of them.”
Her advice for new staff is simple: “Talk to people, ask questions, and speak up. You have to love the kids and the work. If you do, it’s so rewarding.”
A Life of Service Beyond High Road School of Wallingford Primary
Outside of work, Konareski brings that same spirit of service to her community. For more than 12 years, she has volunteered at the Shubert Theatre in New Haven as an usher captain. She also spent eight years coaching middle school cheerleading in East Haven.
After 17 years, Konareski still wakes up excited to come to work. “This is where I want to retire,” she said. “This is family.”
