High Road School of Marion County Celebrates Black History Month Through Student Learning

Students at High Road School of Marion County spent February participating in meaningful learning experiences during Black History Month 2026. Through classroom discussions, creative projects, and collaborative activities, students explored the achievements, culture, and contributions of African Americans throughout history.

Exploring Influential Figures in Black History

Throughout the month, students researched and discussed influential historical figures and the impact their leadership and achievements have had on society. These lessons encouraged students to reflect on perseverance, leadership, and the importance of equality while learning about individuals who helped shape history.

Student work highlighted these lessons in creative ways. One colorful art piece featured a student-created portrait of Martin Luther King Jr., celebrating his legacy and contributions to civil rights. Other artwork displayed in the school showcased figures recognized as heroes in Black history, helping students connect their learning to visual storytelling and artistic expression.

Creative Projects Bring History to Life

Art and collaborative projects played an important role in helping students engage with the material. In one display, students and a staff member stood alongside a honeycomb-shaped collage that highlighted important Black historical figures. The display included artwork and informational text that shared pieces of history connected to the individuals featured.

Another student project included a blue and red poster featuring former President Barack Obama. Students worked together with staff members to create and present the artwork, reinforcing the themes of leadership, perseverance, and representation that were explored throughout the month.

Connecting History With School Community Values

Through art, research, and interactive lessons, students deepened their understanding of diversity and the historical contributions of Black leaders. These activities encouraged thoughtful conversations about respect, perseverance, and the importance of equality.

By engaging in discussions and creative work, students were able to connect historical lessons with values of empathy and inclusion. The activities provided an opportunity for students to reflect on the past while continuing to grow as learners and members of their school community.
