Excel Middle Years Academy wrapped up Black History Month with its first-ever Emya Roots & Rhythms Slam, an inspiring and vibrant celebration of Black history and culture. The event brought together students and staff for an exciting competition that blended historic knowledge with artistic expression.

Three teams of sixth, seventh, and eighth graders, led by two staff coaches, competed in a series of engaging rounds that showcased their talents through creative performances, each based on a chosen theme and skill. The challenge consisted of four sections: an introduction and presentation of the theme, a creative expression and performance segment, a knowledge-based round, and a final reflection with a call to action.

Through spoken word, dance, music, and more, students honored the cultural legacies that have shaped Black History.

To prepare for the day, they were provided a study guide along with event rules and regulations, ensuring a meaningful and educational experience.

A panel of the school’s administrators judged the performances based on a set of criteria, while students and faculty cheered on the teams.

“More than just a challenge, this event sparked excitement in celebrating Black excellence and made learning Black history more interactive and meaningful while deepening students’ appreciation for the trailblazers who paved the way,” said Aatiqah Ali, director of student services, Excel Middle Years Academy.
