Dress for Success partnership builds career readiness

Excel Academy of South Shore recently partnered with Dress for Success to support students’ career readiness through professional development and access to workplace attire.

Interview skills and workplace expectations

Fifteen young women participated in a visit at Dress for Success Greater Chicago office. Students learned essential interview skills, including professional presentation, confident communication, and effective responses to common interview questions. The session also addressed workplace expectations, first impression,s and the role professional attire plays in career readiness and confidence.

Confidence grows through professional attire

Students expressed excitement as they tried on professional clothing and envisioned themselves in future career settings. Several shared that it was their first time owning professional attire and said the experience strengthened their confidence and belief in their ability to succeed in interviews and professional environments.

Removing barriers for students approaching graduation

“Access to professional clothing removes a common barrier students face when pursuing employment, internships, and postsecondary opportunities,” said Teandra N. Sweet, director of student services. “The experience helped students envision themselves in professional spaces and increased motivation as they approach graduation.”

What students received from Dress for Success

Each student received outfits appropriate for interviews and workplace settings, including a pair of pants, two professional tops, a blazer or sweater, and jewelry such as earrings and a necklace. Students also received care packs filled with personal hygiene items, including mouthwash, peppermint,s and deodorant, along with thank-you cards.

“What a tremendous event for the young ladies of Excel South Shore,” said Sweet. “Their visit to Dress for Success was highly impactful and provided valuable information on interview skills, career planning, professional success, and self-care. We look forward to continuing this impactful relationship.”

The partnership, introduced by Ashley Thompson, Chicago Public Schools districtwide work-based learning specialist, will continue with the next visit scheduled for this spring.
