April is a special time at High Road School of Belvidere as students and staff come together to recognize World Autism Month in meaningful and creative ways. Embracing how “Each of us is unique, and when we come together, the puzzle is complete,” the school hosted a variety of activities to promote understanding, acceptance, and unity.

One standout activity included making blue autism awareness beaded bracelets and necklaces. With inspirational messages, the students kept one for themselves and shared others with family, fellow students, and staff – helping to spread awareness and spark conversations throughout the school community.

Students also collaborated to build a large puzzle piece person, symbolizing how every individual contributes uniquely to the whole. Each student designed at least one puzzle piece using shared materials, encouraging communication, teamwork, and appreciation for one another’s creativity.

“The puzzle piece is a powerful symbol of the diverse experiences and perspectives of autistic individuals,” said Kristen Schaffer Heine, director of High Road School of Belvidere. “This project was a beautiful way for our students to express that diversity and celebrate each other.”
