Building Character Through Competition: The CAAEL Program at High Road School of Belvidere

At High Road School of Belvidere, we believe that education extends far beyond the classroom. One of the most exciting and impactful ways our students build important life skills is through our participation in the CAAEL program. This program allows our students to experience healthy competition while also reinforcing the values that are central to our school community: teamwork, respect, responsibility, and positive sportsmanship.
How the CAAEL Program Supports Student Athletics
The CAAEL program provides structured athletic opportunities for outplaced students throughout the school year. This year so far, the students at High Road School of Belvidere have participated in flag football, volleyball, and basketball, with kickball coming up next, giving them a variety of ways to stay active, collaborate with their peers, and represent their school with pride. These events bring together students from multiple schools in a supportive environment where the focus goes beyond simply winning or losing.
Sportsmanship and Respect in the CAAEL Program
One of the most meaningful traditions within the CAAEL program happens at the end of every game. After the game concludes, each team gathers to recognize members of the opposing team with sportsmanship awards. Players identify peers from the other team who demonstrated respect, encouragement, teamwork, and a positive attitude during the game. This practice reinforces that great athletics are not only about skill, but also about how the athletes treat one another. By celebrating these positive behaviors, students learn that integrity and kindness are just as important as performance. So far this year, Daylien from classroom 1, Samara from classroom 2, Dheaven & Tate from classroom 3, Jaxon from classroom 4, Raidyn & Braylynn from classroom 5, Aaron, Jada, & Dale from classroom 13, and Kaycen from classroom 14 have been awarded the sportsmanship award.
How the CAAEL Program Encourages Positive Behavior
The CAAEL program also serves as a powerful incentive for our students. Participation is tied to our school’s behavioral expectations and status system. Students work hard to follow our school norms, demonstrate responsibility, and improve their status so they can earn the opportunity to participate in games. This creates a meaningful goal for many students, encouraging them to make positive choices both inside and outside of their classrooms and throughout the school day.
Opportunities for Students to Compete and Represent Their School
For away games, the rewards become even more exciting for our positive status and above students. These students have the opportunity to travel off campus to compete against other schools, representing High Road School of Belvidere. These trips provide a sense of independence and pride, allowing students to step outside their regular routine and experience the excitement of competing in a new environment.
Celebrating Success After CAAEL Program Games
One of the highlights students look forward to most happens after the games conclude. Following the away games, students get to go out to lunch together before returning to school. This tradition has become a favorite part of the experience, giving students the chance to celebrate their hard work, bond with teammates, and enjoy a well-earned reward.
Why the CAAEL Program Matters for Student Development
Ultimately, the CAAEL program is about much more than athletics. It provides a structured and motivating way for students to build confidence, develop social skills, and practice the values we emphasize every day at High Road School of Belvidere. Through teamwork, friendly competition, and the celebration of sportsmanship, our students gain experiences that help them grow both on and off the field.
We are proud of the way our students represent our school through the CAAEL program, and we look forward to many more seasons of growth, teamwork, and positive competition.
