Blind Date with a Book Inspires Young Readers

Students at High Road School of Hartford Primary are turning pages and turning heads this February with a cute and seasonal event called Blind Date with a Book.

The speech, language, and occupational therapy team members collaborated on this month-long celebration. Their shared passion for books helped create an experience designed to inspire students to fall in love with reading.

How Blind Date with a Book Works

Carefully selected books featuring themes of friendship, kindness, and adventure have been wrapped in festive Valentine’s paper. No covers. No titles. Just a short, intriguing description on the front to spark curiosity without giving too much away. Students choose their “date” based purely on the synopsis. This added a little mystery, a little adventure, and a whole lot of excitement.

The big moment comes when students unwrap their pick and discover the story waiting inside.

Building a Love of Reading Through Surprise

The surprise selections can be enjoyed during independent reading time, free time, or as a shared read-aloud activity, making the experience personalized for every learner. By removing the pressure of judging a book by its cover, the program encourages students to step outside their comfort zones and explore stories they might not have chosen otherwise.

The result has been laughter, curiosity, and conversation. Most importantly, students are building a growing love of reading.

A Creative Literacy Program at High Road School

Blind Date with a Book serves as a reminder that sometimes the best connections happen when readers take a chance on something new. The program is one more way High Road School of Hartford Primary helps students discover their next great love story, one page at a time.
