Excel Middle Years Academy Celebrates Black History Month

Excel Middle Years Academy observed Black History Month with its annual Roots & Rhythms Challenge, a student-centered event focused on culture, creativity, and scholarship.

Students opened the program with a creative expression performance. The event also featured an artistic showcase, a Black History trivia contest, and a call to action encouraging continued learning beyond the event.

Students Compete in the Roots & Rhythms Challenge

Two teams – the Black Mambas and the Unbroken Chains – competed in the challenge. Students delivered thoughtful performances and demonstrated strong knowledge of Black history and achievement. Both teams showed preparation, teamwork, and respect for the legacy of Black leaders past and present.

Unbroken Chains claimed this year’s title with a standout performance across competition categories.

Staff Reflect on the Importance of Black History Month

Aatiqah Ali, student services coordinator, praised the scholars’ efforts.

“The Black History Month Challenge was a powerful celebration of culture, creativity and knowledge,” Ali said. “Scholars took the stage with confidence and pride. Their performances reflected both their preparation and their commitment to honoring Black leaders.”

Director Sadiqa Lucas commended staff and students for their leadership and dedication.

“It is inspiring to see staff lead and plan engaging activities that create meaningful learning opportunities,” Lucas said. “Students brought enthusiasm and competitive spirit to every round. This celebration reflects our ongoing commitment to growth and understanding.”

The annual Roots & Rhythms Challenge continues to honor history while inspiring scholars to learn, lead and uplift others throughout the year.
