Autism Awareness at Sierra School of Solano County

Understanding Autism Through Empathy and Experience
At Sierra School of Solano County, students in one of our classes spent the morning learning about autism awareness. The students began by reading a heartfelt children’s book story that is narrated by a girl named Callie. She describes her twin brother Charlie, who is on the autism spectrum. The story highlights both the challenges and the joys of their relationship, emphasizing that love comes in many forms.
Afterwards, they participated in an engaging interactive slideshow that included videos and simple activities designed to show what it feels like to experience sensory sensitivities or communicate differently.
By the end of the lesson, the students felt more empathetic and confident about how to be kind and inclusive towards their classmates and friends who may be on the autism spectrum.
