Knights Unite: Tailgating for Autism Awareness
At Sierra School at Sherman, Autism Awareness Month highlights what students and staff practice every day: respect, acceptance, and a shared commitment to helping every student feel seen and supported.
A Schoolwide Celebration of Unity
This year, Sierra School at Sherman brought that message to life with a schoolwide tailgating celebration. Students and staff came together as the Sierra Knights, dressed in matching Autism Awareness shirts and celebrating with energy and pride.
The event gave students a chance to connect outside of their typical classroom routines. The day began with morning SHIELD time, the school’s structured meeting that helps set the tone for the day.
During SHIELD time, students talked openly about challenges that can affect their learning and the strategies that help them succeed. That foundation carried into the tailgate, giving students a clear sense of purpose while encouraging connection in a relaxed and supportive setting.
“Celebrating autism is important because it reminds us that differences are not deficits; they are strengths that deserve to be seen, valued, and uplifted,” said Dr. Lasonia Russell, school director. “At Sierra, we recognize that every student brings a unique perspective, a unique way of thinking, and a unique way of engaging with the world.”
Building a Culture of Inclusion
While the tailgate served as a highlight, it also reflected something deeper about the school’s approach. Sierra School at Sherman builds inclusion into the daily experience.
Staff create an environment where students feel comfortable expressing themselves, taking risks, and building confidence over time.
Moments like this reinforce that culture. Students see their peers and teachers support one another, and that consistency helps build trust across the school community.
A Community Where Everyone Belongs
At Sierra School at Sherman, students are encouraged to be themselves, and differences are recognized as strengths. Every member of the Sierra Knights community plays a role in creating a place where everyone belongs.
“I believe that when we intentionally celebrate our students’ differences, we open the door for confidence, connection, and success,” said Russell.
