Achieve Academy East proudly celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month with a variety of activities designed to honor the achievements, traditions, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities. From creative writing to cultural performances, students and staff came together to learn, reflect, and celebrate.

Writing Contest Highlights Student Voices

One standout activity was the Hispanic Heritage Month writing contest. Participating students selected from a range of thoughtful topics, including influential Hispanic figures, Latino history in America, current challenges facing Hispanic communities, and media representation.

Judges selected two students as winners:

Shamiyah J. – middle school

Ziyarrah W. – high school

The school recognized both students with a certificate, a gift card, lunch, and a dress-down pass for their outstanding essays.

Dance and Cultural Learning Through Salsa and Bachata

One of the highlights of the month was the Hispanic Heritage Month assembly, featuring guest speaker and performer Michael Andino from Estilo Dance Studio. He led an engaging, hour-long presentation exploring the origins and cultural significance of two beloved Latin dances, salsa and bachata.

After learning the history and rhythms of these dances, students and staff joined an interactive session full of energy, laughter, and appreciation.

Sharing Food and Community Spirit

To close out the month, the school hosted a catered lunch, featuring authentic dishes provided by Los Potrillos Restaurant. Students with 90% or higher attendance, those who earned the monthly rewards, members of the student government, and staff were invited to enjoy this special celebration together, honoring not just Hispanic culture, but also the values of commitment and community.

“These events are so meaningful for our students,” said David Wong, school director, Achieve Academy East.

“Assemblies and guest speakers provide authentic, firsthand perspectives on Hispanic culture, traditions, and values. They help students develop respect for cultural diversity, break down stereotypes, and appreciate the richness and variety within Hispanic communities. When students hear personal stories and see culture come alive through dance and food, it becomes real to them. It broadens their worldview and deepens their empathy.”
