A Father’s Journey to Find the Best Support

When Robert McMahon took on a greater role in managing his daughter Mackenzie’s education two years ago, he wanted to ensure she continued receiving the best support possible. She was already enrolled at Sierra School of Gateway, and as he worked more closely with the school, he saw firsthand just how much it was helping her thrive. “She’s learned so much,” McMahon said. “Her behavior, her knowledge – everything has improved. It’s because of the staff. They take the time to work with her, and it’s made all the difference.”

How Sierra School of Gateway Helps Students Thrive

Now 14, Mackenzie, who has Dravet syndrome – a rare and severe form of epilepsy – faces challenges with speech and motor function. But Sierra School of Gateway’s individualized approach has helped her flourish. The staff communicates with McMahon regularly, keeping him informed about her progress. “They tell me about words she’s saying and what she’s figuring out,” he said. “That constant communication has been amazing.”

Guidance Through the ESA Scholarship Process

One of the biggest hurdles he faced was transferring the Arizona Empowerment Scholarship Account (ESA) funds into his name. Fortunately, Sierra School of Gateway’s team was there to guide him through the process. “Jessica, Brandy, and the whole team helped me figure out the steps and made sure everything was in place,” he said. “They were so knowledgeable and willing to work with me.”

A School That Feels Like Home

Now, Mackenzie not only thrives at school, but she also looks forward to attending every day. “Going to school was not something she was used to, so it was a little tough at first, but now she loves it,” Robert said. “Sierra School of Gateway has been an incredible place for her, and I know she’s in the right hands for years to come.” For families considering specialized education, McMahon encourages them to reach out to the school. “You’ll feel the sincerity in their voices when they talk about the kids,” he said. “It’s an amazing place.”
