Myles’ Journey with High Road School of Harford County

Myles’ story is one to which many parents of children with behavioral challenges can relate. Frequent suspensions from school, weekly incidents requiring early pickups, and rearranged work schedules to accommodate disruptions are the reality for these families. But it doesn’t have to be. Schools like the High Road School of Harford County can change everything.

Myles Heads to High Road School

The timing wasn’t ideal. Myles began attending the High Road School of Harford County shortly before COVID-19 shut the world down in March 2020. Navigating a new school while adapting to remote learning, compounded by Myles’ anxiety and behavioral issues, led to a rocky start.

High Road Schools prioritize family relationships, knowing family involvement is a strong indicator of student success. After an initial challenging transition, which included in-person home visits, Myles’ family became deeply involved with the school. Once students returned to in-person learning, things began to click for Myles.

Success at School

Backed by his parents’ support and fueled by his hard work, Myles demonstrated remarkable improvement in both behavior and academics. His mom, Diana, attributes his transformation to the school’s approach. “They had small class sizes, and they catered to him and his learning style,” explained Diana. “He wasn’t just lumped into a group of kids and labeled. He was seen as an individual with so much potential.”

Teachers at the High Road School worked collaboratively with Myles and his parents to address his behavioral and anxiety challenges. This led to major improvements both at school and at home. “The teachers care so deeply about Myles,” said Diana. At home, “he began expressing his feelings and needs, apologizing if he overreacted, and his overreactions have significantly decreased.”

Myles’ Mission: Transition Back to Public School

Last year, as a seventh grader, Myles expressed a desire to return to his public school, despite past difficulties. Thanks to the support of High Road’s staff, his parents felt confident in this decision. Myles started eighth grade back at his previous school, prepared emotionally and academically for success.

“High Road School was exactly what Myles needed,” said Diana. “They helped him set goals and get to where he needed to be.” Diana encourages other families in similar situations to consider High Road: “Do it—it will change your life, and you’ll only regret not doing it sooner!”
