At just 18, Marcos Mercedes Carmona has already shown remarkable determination to succeed. A recent graduate of Phoenix Academy, Carmona spent only eight months at the school, but its impact on him and his future will last a lifetime.

Carmona transferred from his home high school to Phoenix Academy because he wanted a more structured learning environment for himself.

“The stricter environment was beneficial for me because I get distracted easily,” he said. “At Phoenix, they care about how you’re doing, not just in school but at home, too.” The smaller class sizes and personal attention at Phoenix created an atmosphere where Carmona could thrive. “The teachers connect with you on a personal level, not just academically. It makes a big difference being guided by staff who want you to succeed,” Carmona said. That supportive environment helped Carmona stay on track to graduate.

Their encouragement inspired Carmona to step out of his comfort zone. He even spoke at a school board meeting about his positive experience at Phoenix Academy. “I told them how much I like it,” he said. School Director Joseph Gettle praised Carmona’s resilience and growth. “Marcos embodies our mission and vision for learning by embracing challenges,” Gettle said.

“He reminds us that with hard work and perseverance, success is possible.”

Carmona plans to attend Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology in Lancaster, where he’ll study automotive technology. “I’m most excited about working on cars,” he said. Among the many people who have supported him on his journey, one stands out: Ms. Rodriguez, his Spanish teacher. “She treated me like I was her son,” Carmona said. “She even cried when I graduated.” Looking back, Carmona believes he might not have earned his diploma if he had stayed at his previous school. “Phoenix Academy gave me the structure and support I needed,” he said. “They made me feel like I could really do it.”

Congratulations on your accomplishments! We’re excited to see what you’ll achieve in the future.
