High Road School at Southbridge’s Marshmallow Math Madness

Marshmallow Math Madness at High Road School at Southbridge
The High Road School at Southbridge, an in-district classroom, buzzed with excitement as students, families, and staff school-wide gathered for Math Palooza, a hands-on learning event. For its own twist, the High Road School created “Marshmallow Math Madness,” turning math into an adventure. The sweet aroma of warm cocoa filled the room as students in the first-year K-2 classroom program participated in interactive math activities, all while family members watched.
“I loved seeing the parents attend the event and how happy the kids were to work with them,” said Mrs. King, classroom teacher.
Hands-On Math Activities for Young Learners
Another fun activity for students in grades K-2 was “Winter Marshmallow Math” – they counted marshmallows displayed in 10 frames on number cards up to 10 and practiced number matching by finding and tracing the correct number on a recording page. The activity helped students match numbers to quantities, identify numerals, and count objects. Students also counted mini marshmallows to solve math word problems.
Families Join the Marshmallow Math Madness
“It was truly heartwarming to see families and students working together, rolling up their sleeves and solving problems side by side,” said Miguelina Felix, operations manager. “Parents and guardians joined in the fun and participated in sensory activities.”
Celebrating Learning at Math Palooza
A raffle gave each attending family a chance to win a prize.
“Events like Math Palooza remind us how powerful it can be when we bring parents, students, and educators together to celebrate learning,” Felix said. “As an in-district classroom, it is important that we create an inclusive environment where all kiddos are included.”
Thank you to every family who came out and participated, making this event such a sweet success.
