Excel Academy of Southwest Senior Spotlight Class of 2026

While balancing two jobs, Hillary Bonilla demonstrated remarkable determination, successfully completing her studies and graduating in December as a proud member of the Class of 2026.
A Fresh Start at Excel Academy of Southwest
Bonilla came to Excel Academy of Southwest seeking a fresh start after facing attendance challenges at her former high school following a period of personal loss. With encouragement from her family and the support of the Excel community, she recommitted to her education and began charting a new path forward.
During her time at Excel, Bonilla earned her Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) credential through First Steps to Excellence Healthcare Training Academy. She also became increasingly engaged in school, demonstrating leadership, accountability, and strong follow-through skills.
Building Confidence and Accountability
“Hillary’s biggest opportunities for growth were building consistent attendance, strengthening her follow-through, and developing her confidence in advocating for herself,” said Lori Hicks-Vega, director of student services. “She had experienced significant personal loss, but we saw strong potential in her work ethic and resilience. Over time, she learned how to channel those strengths into accountability and self-motivation.”
That growth was evident both academically and personally. Bonilla improved her attendance, took responsibility for her goals, and stepped into a leadership role as a teacher assistant in her robotics and physics class, all while working and completing her CNA certification.
For Bonilla, enrolling at Excel marked a turning point. “Coming to Excel felt like a chance to start over and get back on track,” she said. “I knew I had a future, and I had to show up for it.”
Balancing School, Work, and Career Goals
Balancing school and two jobs wasn’t easy, but graduating early kept her focused. “I reminded myself that I had to keep showing up to school if I wanted to finish strong and move forward with my life,” she said.
Earning her CNA certification became a powerful milestone. “It showed me that I could do hard things,” Bonilla said. “It feels like the first big step toward my future goal of becoming a nurse practitioner.”
Excel’s supportive environment played a critical role in her success. “My teachers believed in me and helped me speak up for myself when I needed help,” she said. “Because of them, I feel more confident about my future.”
Why Mid-Year Graduates Matter at Excel Academy
Bonilla is one of 11 Excel Academy of Southwest students graduating in December, and her journey reflects why celebrating mid-year graduates matters. “Success doesn’t follow a single timeline,” Hicks-Vega said. “Students like Hillary exemplify perseverance and determination, and their stories inspire others who may be facing similar challenges.”
After graduation, Bonilla plans to attend college while continuing to work, moving forward with confidence, resilience, and a clear sense of purpose.
Her advice to other students considering an accelerated path: “If you want the life you see for yourself, you have to work for it. Your future matters more than what’s happening right now.”
