Dashiel’s Journey at High Road School of Wallingford

Dashiel’s Journey Begins at High Road School of Wallingford
When Dashiel started 8th grade at the High Road School of Wallingford in April 2024, he was entering a new chapter, and his first few months were challenging. He sometimes struggled with outbursts, and his behavior often led to time spent outside of the classroom.
“When I first got here, I was shy and sensitive,” said Dashiel. “Small issues would lead to larger crises and time out of the classroom. I was going through a lot with my home changes, and after years of hard work, it paid off.”
Academic Growth and the Power of Determination
Dashiel didn’t let those struggles define him. With determination and support from his teachers, he has made significant academic progress and worked hard to become the student he is today.
He now manages his emotions, focuses on his studies, and has strengthened skills that help him succeed. Academically, Dashiel has made impressive strides, and his grades reflect his effort. “It is worth the hard work for the good grades,” he said.
Setting Goals and Achieving New Milestones
In fact, during the fall marking period of this school year, his lowest grade was an 86, and he continues to challenge himself to do even better. Dashiel works independently, asks for help when needed, and has set a few goals for the future, including maintaining a high GPA – currently 3.67 – and achieving all A’s. He also has aspirations of becoming a therapist.
“Coping skills matter,” said Dashiel. “They had a big impact on my life. You don’t have to have the same coping skills as everyone else.”
What Makes Dashiel Stand Out
What sets Dashiel apart isn’t just his academic progress – it’s the way he shows up for others.
“If there was one word to describe Dashiel, it would be humility,” said Ms. Townes, operations manager of the High Road School of Wallingford. “He takes everything in stride and always chooses to be a kind and generous human being. He will always consider the impact of a situation on others before himself.”
If classmates seem visibly upset or may need a break, he is willing to step in and encourage staff to prioritize them first. “Dashiel compliments other students on their i-Ready tier levels. This is who he is. It is his natural persona and is hard to put into words,” said Ms. Townes.
Dashiel’s thoughtfulness and academic success earned him Student of the Month this past September. High Road staff vote for a student who exemplifies consideration, accountability, safe and engaged traits, and has good attendance.
Now in 10th grade, Dashiel is taking advantage of the opportunity to complete English and art courses at his district school, demonstrating both academic ambition and personal growth.
Looking Ahead With Confidence
“It is a journey transitioning [back] to public school,” Dashiel said. “It took a lot of hard work. But I remembered my goal.”
