Excel Academies in Chicago Celebrate Black History Month
Black History Month Chicago Schools Celebration Across Campuses
This year marked the 100th anniversary of Black History Month, with Chicago schools coming together to celebrate through meaningful activities and events. The Chicagoland Excel Academies – Englewood, Roseland, Southwest, and South Shore – along with Safe Achieve Academy, part of the Chicago Public Schools’ Options Network, celebrated through activities that encouraged learning, creativity, community, and friendly competition.
Cultural Activities and Student Engagement
The month included events highlighting the achievements, culture, and contributions of Black Americans across Chicago schools. At Excel Academy of Roseland, students and teachers enjoyed a luncheon featuring cultural favorite foods. Students also created displays throughout the building, decorating bulletin boards and classroom doors, spotlighting Black American leaders, historical places, and innovations.
Black History Quiz Bowl Brings Chicago Schools Together
As a culminating event, students from across Chicago schools came together to compete in the 12th annual Black History Quiz Bowl, held in Excel Academy of Englewood’s auditorium.
After weeks of team preparation, students showcased their knowledge, quick thinking, and excitement. The game featured 100 questions across multiple categories, including history, politics, arts and entertainment, science and discovery, and sports.
Beyond the competition, the program helps build connections among students from different campuses. While the competitive spirit keeps the energy high, the experience also gives students the opportunity to learn from one another.
Celebrating Student Achievement and Winners
In the end, the host team, Excel Academy of Englewood, won the 2026 quiz bowl, rising from second place last year. Excel Academy of Southwest earned second place, followed by Excel Academy South Shore in third. Congrats to all of the winners! This Black History Month, Chicago schools’ celebration highlighted the power of learning, connection, and community.
