Excel Academy Central Students Stitch Up New Skills in Sewing Club

Every Friday afternoon, a buzz of creativity fills the room at Excel Academy Central’s sewing club. Led by English teacher Karyn Driscoll, the club gives students a chance to learn a practical skill while expressing their creativity.

The club began last year after a student asked Driscoll to teach them how to sew. With donations, a small fundraiser, and fabric from her personal stash, she launched the two-hour weekly after-school program. Equipped with four sewing machines and an overlock serger, four students attend regularly, with a few more dropping in as they can. Sometimes the group is joined by other members.

Students start by learning basic skills, including understanding sewing patterns, threading a needle, measuring and cutting fabric, and operating a sewing machine. Their first project was a simple rectangular pin cushion. Since then, they’ve moved on to more advanced creations like messenger bags, pillowcases, and even custom dolls based on their own drawings.

“You can make stuff you can’t find in stores,” said one student. “It’s basically a limited edition because you made it yourself.”

Driscoll began sewing as a child in summer camp. By 16, she was attempting to make her own costume for the New York Renaissance Faire. Over time, her skills improved, and today she’s working on a 16th-century Turkish coat, which she plans to wear to an event later this spring.

Students bring a range of interests to the club. Some love fashion, some love drawing, and others just want to learn how to fix a hole in their clothes. But they all share one thing: the pride of creating something from scratch.

For Driscoll, the best part is watching those lightbulb moments. “One of my favorite things is having this relaxed time together – a safe space filled with creativity and joy. I love when a project comes together and seeing their faces light up,” she said. “Mistakes happen, but that’s how you learn.”

She happily accepts any students who wishes to join. Participants must maintain a passing grade and have signed permission from a parent or guardian.

With just a few weeks left in the school year, the club is discussing a final project showcase, which might be a pajama pants fashion show. We can’t wait to see the masterpieces.
