A Supportive Start at High Road School of Anne Arundel County

When Clyde started attending the High Road School of Anne Arundel County in the first grade, it was hard to get him out of his shell, and his speech was extremely limited. Now in the sixth grade, his mother, Autumn Meyers, reflects on how far he has come academically and personally, and the guidance that has helped shape him along the way.

“High Road was the winner right from the get-go,” Meyers said. “When we walked into the school, it was a breath of fresh air. Meeting Program Director Tara Chander, we were very overwhelmed at the time, but she explained the process and was so reassuring about Clyde.”

Encouragement and Growth Through Personalized Learning

In the beginning, Meyers noticed how relieved her son was, and he didn’t fight to go to school. Knowing he had the extra support he needed, she shared that it took the biggest weight off her family’s shoulders. Today, Meyers says Clyde is excelling academically and behaviorally. One especially impactful person is his teacher, Mr. Alexander Stroh, who the family says has been amazing with communication, supporting Clyde with his academics, encouraging his outside-the-box creativity, and letting Clyde show up authentically.

“Clyde has a lot more motivation and engages more,” said Mr. Stroh. “He started to take his learning into his own hands. He also has a massive love for the arts, and we incorporated his interests into our projects.”

That encouragement has paid off. Not only is Clyde thriving, but he’s demonstrating more confidence in his skills. Meyers said Clyde is expressing himself more often, completing tasks such as ordering food for himself, excelling at math, and even strategizing with friends on Fortnite. Mr. Stroh has also seen Clyde’s self-esteem grow; Clyde beams with pride about his school achievements.

Real-World Learning Beyond the Classroom

Clyde’s curiosity and learning also extend far beyond the classroom. Over the summer, as several storms passed through the area, Clyde was able to identify signs of a tornado and also stated where to take safety cover. Meyers is grateful her son is learning these important life skills and real-world materials alongside academics.

In July, Clyde visited New York City and toured historical sites such as the Statue of Liberty, the World Trade Center, Times Square, and Central Park. He was enamored with the city, even saying he wanted to move there. An avid photographer, a highlight of his trip was capturing shots of NYC landmarks for a scrapbook.

Reflecting on Clyde’s Journey at High Road School of Anne Arundel County

As Meyers reflects on her son’s journey, she’s filled with gratitude for the High Road community. “Thank you all very much for all your support with Clyde over the years. I’m still coming to terms with the fact that he’s already in sixth grade this year.”

We’re excited to continue to see Clyde tap into his potential this year!
