Sierra School of South Mountain Autism Support: A Life-Changing Journey for Charles

When So’Toya Boyd’s son, Charles, was diagnosed with autism in 2021, she wasn’t sure where to start. Navigating school options and figuring out the right support system felt overwhelming. Thankfully, she had guidance from her sister, whose own child had attended Sierra School of South Mountain. That recommendation led Boyd to a learning environment that would transform Charles’ life.

“Since being there, he has blossomed,” Boyd said. “He used to melt into the background, but now he’s advocating for himself, talking more, and feeling comfortable in class. It took time, but the staff worked so hard with him.”

Sierra School of South Mountain provides a supportive and understanding environment where students like Charles can grow academically, socially, and emotionally. Initially standoffish in the new setting, Charles gradually became more engaged. Today his mom reports that he has friends, attends birthday parties, and even speaks up in class – something that once seemed unlikely.

How the Arizona ESA Program Made Specialized Education Possible

One of the biggest factors in making Charles’ specialized education possible was the Arizona Empowerment Scholarship Account (ESA) program. As a first-time applicant, Boyd was unfamiliar with the process, but Sierra School of South Mountain’s staff guided her every step of the way.

“They gave me the information I needed and walked me through it. For my family, ESA has been life-changing,” she said. “Without it, I don’t know how I would have gotten Charles the help he needed.”

Looking ahead, Boyd is hopeful that Charles will continue developing life skills as he moves toward adulthood. “He’s come so far, and I know this school will help him keep growing,” she said. “Sierra School of South Mountain isn’t just a school – it’s been the perfect fit, and I’m so grateful for the love and support they’ve shown my son.”
