Army Veteran Charles Peacock Makes a Difference at Sierra School of Gateway

Lessons From Military Service
As Sierra School of Gateway recognizes Veterans Day, assistant teacher Charles Peacock reflects on his U.S. Army service and how the lessons he learned continue to influence his work with students.
Peacock joined the Army in 1989 and served until 1991, reaching the rank of private first class (E-3). He was stationed at Fort Ord in Monterey, California, where he learned the importance of discipline and following through on responsibilities.
“My military service was a great learning experience for following directions,” Peacock said. “It taught me to be disciplined and to be punctual.”
Discovering a Career in Education
Peacock hadn’t planned on a career in education, but after joining Sierra School of Gateway in 2022, he discovered how much he enjoyed working with students. He credits his military experience with helping him develop the patience and consistency he brings to the classroom.
Seeing the Moment Learning Clicks
One of Peacock’s favorite parts of the job is watching students grasp something they’ve been working hard to understand.
“What I enjoy most is when that light comes on when the student really gets it,” Peacock said.
Encouraging Veterans to Consider Education
Peacock encourages other veterans to consider working in education, where they can use their experience to help students learn and grow.
“It gives you the feeling of making a difference in a kid’s life,” Peacock said.
Reflecting on Veterans Day
For Peacock, Veterans Day is also a chance to reflect on his own military experience.
“It gives me a sense of pride that I was able to serve my country,” Peacock said.
Continuing to Serve His Community
Today, Peacock continues to serve his community through his work at Sierra School of Gateway, helping students develop the skills they need to succeed in school and beyond.
