Guide for Families Exploring Special Education Support
Helpful Questions to Support Conversations with Your Child’s IEP Team
Navigating the Individualized Education Program (IEP)* process can feel overwhelming. Whether your child receives special education services within the district or may benefit from a more specialized setting, asking the right questions can help you make informed decisions and actively participate in educational planning.
For example, in Texas, an IEP meeting may be called an “ARD” (Admission, Review, and Dismissal) meeting, and in Connecticut, you may hear “PPT” (Planning and Placement Team) meeting.
Understanding the Process
Educational placement decisions are made through the IEP process, where families, educators, and district representatives work together to determine the services and supports a student needs to be successful. Depending on a student’s unique needs, the IEP team may consider a continuum of support options, ranging from services within the district to a specialized private day school placement when appropriate.
- What supports and services are currently available within my child’s school and district?
- How are decisions made regarding educational placement and services?
- How can I best contribute to the IEP planning process?

Evaluating Educational Programs
Whether your child is receiving services within the district or exploring additional support options, understanding how a program meets students’ academic, emotional, and behavioral needs is important.

How does the program measure and track progress toward IEP goals?

What academic, behavioral, therapeutic, and related services are available?

How does the program help students develop social, emotional, communication, and independent living skills?

Understanding Special Education Options
Some students may require a more intensive level of academic, behavioral, therapeutic, or emotional support. In these situations, the IEP team may discuss specialized educational settings, including private day schools.
- What factors are being considered when evaluating placement options?
- How would a specialized setting support my child’s academic, behavioral, emotional, and transition needs?
- How will progress be monitored and communicated?
- What transition opportunities exist, and how will my child be supported if they are ready to move to a less restrictive environment?
Placement decisions are made through the IEP process and are based on each student’s individual needs. The goal is always to provide the appropriate level of support in an environment where the student can make meaningful progress.

Planning for the Future
Effective educational programs focus on today’s needs but also on helping students prepare for future success.
- How does the program support long-term goals and future transitions?
- What opportunities are available for vocational training, life skills development, or post-secondary planning?
- How are students supported when transitioning between settings, schools, or programs?

Finding the Best Fit for Your Child
Every child’s educational journey is unique. By asking questions, understanding available options, and actively participating in the IEP process, families can help identify the environment where their child can learn, grow, and thrive.

Support for Your Child. And for You.
“I love the teachers at High Road School of Nashville and the relationship they have with each individual student. They are very supportive to my child and to me as the parent. The teachers call me daily and give updates on my child’s progress and behavior, which is important to me. I recommend this school to any student with an IEP or a student who needs the extra support in a small classroom setting.”
