Valdosta City School of Scholars Honors District Partners
Valdosta City School of Scholars began the 2026-27 school year by recognizing four district leaders whose partnership and support have made an impact on the school community.
The celebration coincided with World Never Give Up Day and reflected Valdosta City Schools Superintendent Dr. Craig Lockhart’s message for the new school year: “Never, Never, Never Quit!”
Recognizing Leadership, Integrity and Excellence
During the event, Valdosta City School of Scholars administrators recognized Lockhart along with three other district leaders: Royce Thomas, assistant superintendent of support services; Sabrina Smith, director of school safety; and Randy Jones, safety and security specialist.
Each leader received a personalized gold sweater. At Valdosta City School of Scholars, the special recognition symbolizes leadership, integrity and excellence.
“We wanted to honor the individuals who so consistently demonstrate those qualities,” said Sarah Holland, school director at Valdosta City School of Scholars. “We’re proud to recognize these district leaders because their support, partnership and presence mean so much to our school community. Their commitment helps ensure our students and staff have the encouragement, resources and leadership they need to grow and succeed.”
Bringing a Message of Perseverance to Students
The celebration made an impression on Lockhart, who returned to the school the following day to spend time with students and speak with them directly.
During the visit, Lockhart shared parts of his personal story and offered students words of encouragement. He reminded them that they are not forgotten by the broader community.
Lockhart also encouraged students to view where they are today as one stepping stone on the path toward what comes next. His visit brought the districtwide message of perseverance directly to students while demonstrating the personal investment of district leaders in their success.
A Partnership Supporting Student Growth
The recognition and follow-up visit highlighted the ongoing partnership between Valdosta City School of Scholars and Valdosta City Schools.
“The partnership with Valdosta City Schools strengthens our mission and reminds our students that they are surrounded by people who believe in them and will never give up on their success,” said Holland.
Valdosta City School of Scholars is a specialized educational program. It operates in partnership with Specialized Education Services, Inc. and Valdosta City Schools. The school supports students who have behavioral challenges while helping them achieve academic growth.
