Creativity Meets Technology in the Art Elective Classroom

Students at High Road School of Hartford High School recently completed an end-of-the-year hands-on art project that combined creativity, technology, and vocational skill-building.

The project began in an art elective class when teacher Ms. Parshley noticed that while many students were comfortable using their cell phones, they had limited experience with other types of technology. Looking for a way to build digital literacy while encouraging creative expression, she developed an art-based design project using Canva.

Throughout the project, students learned a variety of practical technology skills, including how to search for and download images, copy and paste content, and use digital design tools to create original artwork. Their assignment was to design a custom sweatshirt, giving them the opportunity to showcase their interests and creativity while gaining experience with technology they may encounter in future educational or workplace settings.

Student Engagement Through Personalized Design

The project quickly became a favorite among students. As they worked on their designs, many became deeply engaged in the creative process, often wanting to continue refining their work rather than taking breaks or moving on to their next class.

An Art and Technology Project with Real-World Applications

As students completed their digital designs, Ms. Parshley saw an opportunity to take the project a step further. The art lesson evolved into a real-world learning experience when students used a Cricut machine and a heat press to transform their designs into wearable sweatshirts.

By participating in every stage of the process, students gained exposure to design technology and equipment commonly used in creative and vocational industries. They also experienced the satisfaction of turning an idea into a finished product.

Building Confidence Through Hands-On Learning

The completed sweatshirts represent the creativity, problem-solving skills, and technological knowledge students developed throughout the experience. Most importantly, they serve as a lasting reminder of what students can accomplish when given opportunities to explore new skills through engaging, hands-on learning.

At High Road School of Hartford High School, projects like this help students build confidence, develop practical skills, and discover new ways to express their creativity while preparing for future success.
