A Career Dedicated to Supporting Students and Families

Sierra School of San Joaquin has named Dustin Hefner its new school director, bringing more than 20 years of experience supporting students, families, and educators in special education settings.

Hefner joined the organization in 2017 and has served in multiple leadership roles throughout his career. His experience spans both school-based and in-home settings, giving him a broad perspective on how students grow across environments.

Interestingly, Hefner’s path into special education began unexpectedly.

“I was dropping a friend off for an interview, and they had an extra spot,” Hefner said. “I came to really enjoy working with students and seeing the growth they could make. Over time, I also saw how much our work impacts families at home, not just students in the classroom.”

Dustin Hefner Brings a Student-Centered Leadership Approach

As he steps into the director role, Hefner, a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) said his focus is on strengthening relationships, supporting staff, and creating an environment where students feel excited to come to school.

“I want Sierra to feel caring and warm,” he said. “I want people to see smiles, hear laughter and witness students genuinely engaging with staff and each other.”

Hefner describes his leadership style as highly visible and relationship-driven. Rather than managing from behind a desk, he prefers to spend time in classrooms, helping staff and connecting directly with students.

“If staff feel supported, it flows down to students,” he said. “When you build up staff confidence and create that ecosystem of support, you get better outcomes for everyone.”

Building Strong Partnerships with Families

He also emphasized the importance of open communication with families and district partners.

“I am very solution-oriented,” Hefner said. “Families deserve honesty and consistent communication. I always want parents to know we are working together and focused on helping their child succeed.”

In addition to his background in applied behavior analysis, Hefner also brings experience in business administration and program leadership. He said those experiences help him approach challenges from multiple perspectives while keeping student growth at the center of decision-making.

Looking Ahead

Looking ahead, Hefner hopes to continue strengthening Sierra School of San Joaquin’s reputation as a student-centered program that helps young people build confidence and successfully transition back to district settings when appropriate.

“Reputation matters,” he said. “I want families, districts and students to know Sierra is a place where students are supported, challenged and genuinely cared for.”

Outside of school, Hefner is a husband and father of two daughters. He said being a parent has further strengthened his commitment to helping students of all ages reach their potential.

Sierra School of San Joaquin serves students with diverse academic, behavioral, and emotional needs through individualized instruction, therapeutic supports, and a highly structured learning environment.
