Young Authors Celebrate What Makes Them Unique

A Creative Project Focused on Self-Expression
Students in the primary/middle classroom at High Road School of Wallingford recently became published authors through a creative project focused on self-expression.
Throughout the month of April, students worked together to create a class book titled My Unique Self. This project is designed to celebrate the qualities, interests, and experiences that make students who they are.
How Young Authors Brought Their Stories to Life
Each student received a writing page and a blank illustration sheet to complete their contribution to the book. On the writing pages, students reflected on what makes them unique. They then created colorful illustrations to accompany their writing and bring their ideas to life.
After weeks of work and production, the finished books arrived. Each student received a personal copy to take home and share with family members. For many students, it marked the first time they had contributed to a published book and experienced what it feels like to become an author.
Celebrating Creativity and Confidence
Students proudly celebrated the accomplishment together as a class. Each sharing in the excitement of seeing their ideas and artwork in print.
“Celebrating differences is so important, especially in a time when differences can sometimes divide people into silos,” said Letitia Townes, operations manager at High Road School of Wallingford. “Through this project, our students had the opportunity to celebrate what makes them different and share, through both writing and conversation, how those differences make them unique.”
Ultimately, the project supported writing, creativity, and self-reflection. Additionally, it encourages students to recognize and appreciate the individuality of their classmates. By turning their thoughts and artwork into a published book, students gained a sense of pride and accomplishment that extends beyond the classroom.
Not only does the My Unique Self project build students’ confidence, but it also provides them with an opportunity to celebrate who they are.
