Excel Middle Years Academy recently celebrated a cherished highlight of the school year by recognizing eighth graders during the annual Signing Day event.

“This ceremony gave students an opportunity to share their future plans with pride and excitement, while surrounded by their families, staff, and supportive district partners,” said Sadiqa D. Lucas, M.Ed., executive director of Excel Middle Years Academy.

Students Share Their Future Plans

Each eighth grader marched in, reminiscent of a graduation ceremony, and stepped into the spotlight one by one. They were seated at beautifully decorated tables with their two main supporters. The students introduced themselves, saying, “Hi, my name is … and I will be attending … in the 2026-27 school year. In the future, I want to be a …”

The event featured a special guest speaker, Sarah Ashley. Ashley is the Vice President of the Philadelphia Board of Education, who inspired students with her words.

A Celebration of Community and Achievement

The intimate setting allowed for deeper connections as students cheered one another on. The atmosphere reflected pride and accomplishment as students who had overcome significant challenges marked an important milestone.

“A heartfelt round of applause goes to the dedicated staff, especially Ms. Ali, director of student services coordinator, who initiated the planning back in September. Her vision and commitment truly made this event possible,” said Lucas.

Commitment to the Next Chapter

Each student signed a certificate and commitment contract, pledging to stay focused, stay in school, and continue striving toward excellence. Students also received a lapel pin, recited a Scholar’s Oath, and publicly declared their intentions for the next chapter of their academic journey.

Recognizing Excellence on Signing Day

As part of the annual Signing Day event, administrators also proudly presented the prestigious “Keys to the School award” to student Ahmad Butler. This honor is given to students who have demonstrated their commitment and dedication by attending Excel Middle Years for three consecutive years, from sixth grade through eighth grade.

“The keys symbolize the invaluable spirit and resilience our students have shown throughout their journey,” said Lucas. “We are thrilled to celebrate the remarkable achievements of Ahmad and recognize his hard work and perseverance.”s

Best of luck to the students as they prepare for high school!
