Island Adventure: A Summer of Exploration at Sierra School

At Sierra School, learning doesn’t stop when the school year ends. Once again this summer, students will continue building skills and confidence through the Extended School Year (ESY) program, guided by the 2026 theme, Island Adventure: A Summer of Exploration.
Designed for students whose IEP teams determine the need for continued instruction, ESY maintains progress and prevents regression while offering a structured and engaging environment.
A Summer Built for Growth
Throughout the summer, students will take part in hands-on learning experiences that reinforce academic, behavioral, and functional skills. The Island Adventure theme adds an extra layer of engagement, encouraging students to learn with purpose, work together, and navigate challenges in new ways.
Support That Stays Consistent
In small, supportive classroom settings, instruction remains closely aligned to IEP goals. Students will continue building foundational academic skills while also strengthening communication, collaboration, and problem-solving. The program prepares students to return in the fall ready to continue their growth.
Whether students are exploring new concepts, practicing routines, or building independence, ESY serves as a consistent and supportive extension of the school year.
As students chart their course through the summer, ESY offers an opportunity to build confidence, strengthen skills, and stay connected to learning.
Adventure awaits.
Understanding the Extended School Year Program
What is Extended School Year?
Extended School Year (ESY) provides a special education program outside the regular school year when an IEP team determines continued instruction is necessary to prevent significant regression and support progress toward goals.
Who is eligible for ESY?
Your child’s IEP team determines eligibility based on individual needs. ESY may be appropriate for students who require ongoing academic, behavioral, or related support during the summer months.
What does ESY look like at Sierra School?
Students participate in small, structured classroom environments with instruction aligned to their IEP goals. Programming includes academic support, behavioral and emotional skill development, and related services as outlined in the IEP.
Can new students participate in ESY?
Students enrolling for the upcoming school year may participate if their IEP team recommends ESY through the IEP process. The program can also serve as a helpful transition, allowing students to become familiar with the environment and expectations ahead of the start of school.
Extended School Year (ESY)
Maintaining Momentum, One Goal at a Time
Extended School Year (ESY) services are provided to students whose IEP team determines that continued instruction beyond the traditional school year is necessary to maintain progress. ESY helps ensure students return in the fall ready to continue their growth without interruption.
Our ESY program is a structured extension of each student’s individualized education plan. Students receive targeted academic and behavioral support aligned directly to IEP goals delivered in an engaging summer learning environment that reinforces skills and builds confidence.
