Read Across America School Activities at High Road

Students at High Road School of Hartford Primary celebrated Read Across America Week 2026 with a series of themed activities designed to bring literacy to life.

Throughout the week, students filled classrooms with excitement as they participated in daily read-alouds featuring picture books with a strong focus on social-emotional learning, helping them build both literacy skills and stronger connections.

Each day introduced a new theme that made reading fun and interactive. One highlight was “Put Me in the Zoo” day, when visitors from Hungerford Nature Center brought a variety of animals for students to see and touch, creating a memorable, hands-on learning experience. Another favorite tradition, the Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast, brought students and staff together to share a meal inspired by the beloved story while celebrating the joy of reading.

Daily mystery readers added an element of surprise and excitement, while extension activities connected to the stories allowed students to deepen their understanding through creative tasks.

Connecting Literacy to Future Opportunities

The week concluded with the inspiring theme “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!” Students participated in a hands-on career fair, exploring more than a dozen different professions from chef to dental hygienist through interactive activities. This culminating event encouraged students to think about their futures while reinforcing the connection between literacy and real-world opportunities.

Celebrating a Love of Reading

“Read Across America Week 2026 was a fun and engaging celebration that fostered a love of reading while supporting students’ social, emotional, and academic growth,” said Paige Canty, speech-language pathologist, High Road Schools of Connecticut.
