Career Exploration for High School Students at High Road School

At High Road School of Bloomington, students in the Spark high school classroom are engaging in career exploration. They are discovering what life after graduation can look like through hands-on learning and community-based experiences.

Throughout the semester, students have participated in several visits and partnerships designed to connect classroom learning to real career pathways. One key partner is Heartland Community College, where multiple groups of students toured programs aligned to their interests.

College and Career Pathway Experiences

Upperclassmen explored mechanics and industrial career pathways, while sophomores participated in general campus tours. As a result, this allowed students to get an early introduction to college life. Students interested in public safety visited Heartland’s First Responder Training Center, where they learned about careers in fire science and emergency response.

Students also visited the Union Training Hall in Stanford to learn more about careers in the construction trades. During the visit, they were introduced to apprenticeship opportunities and gained insight into the day-to-day responsibilities of road construction crews.

Building Life Skills for Long-Term Success

Back in the classroom, the students continue building practical life skills that support long-term independence, reinforcing career exploration for high school students. Lessons have focused on job searching, budgeting, and understanding workplace expectations. Guest speakers from the armed services also visited to share how military service can open doors to education and career opportunities.

Expanding Career Opportunities Beyond Graduation

“The experiences helped students better understand their own interests while increasing awareness of local resources and career options,” said Katy Killian, school director.

With additional partnerships and opportunities already in development, High Road School of Bloomington continues to provide students with meaningful exposure to the many paths available after graduation. These efforts continue to strengthen career exploration for high school students across the program.
