Big Helpers, Little Readers Program at Sierra School of Gilbert

Creating Meaningful Mentorship Opportunities
Students at Sierra School of Gilbert participate in programs designed to encourage responsibility, leadership, and connection across grade levels. One such initiative is the Big Helpers, Little Readers program, which provides high school students with the opportunity to serve as mentors to younger peers from elementary classes within the school community.
High school students work intentionally to earn participation in the program. By demonstrating consistent effort and positive behavior, they gain the opportunity to take on a mentorship role that supports both their own growth and the learning experience of younger students.
Building Literacy and Leadership Skills
Through the Big Helpers, Little Readers program, high school students serve as reading tutors as they read books alongside elementary-age students. These shared reading sessions promote literacy while creating meaningful interactions between students of different ages and abilities. Younger students benefit from additional reading support and positive peer engagement, while high school students practice communication, patience, and leadership skills in a structured and supportive environment.
This experience allows high school students to step into the role of role models, reinforcing the importance of responsibility and positive influence within the school community.
Reinforcing School Values Through Participation
Students work each week to demonstrate Consideration, Accountability, Safe behavior, and Engagement in order to earn their place in the program. High school students who participate also earn C.A.S.E. Cash, which can be used at the school store, further reinforcing positive behavior and goal setting.
Both high school and elementary students look forward to participating in the Big Helpers, Little Readers program. By connecting students through mentorship and shared learning, the program strengthens relationships across classrooms and supports academic and social development throughout the school.
