World Kindness Day Celebration at High Road Academy

World Kindness Day was recently celebrated at the High Road Academy of Prince George’s County with a weeklong series of thoughtful and engaging activities.
Ms. Kearney, the school social worker, partnered with her colleague, Ms. Sanders, to facilitate group sessions with the students. They explored the significance of World Kindness Day and discussed practical ways to demonstrate kindness every day. The goal of the initiative was to empower both students and staff to recognize and honor kindness in meaningful ways.
Encouraging Kindness Through Recognition
Staff received stickers and handouts to give to students whenever they witnessed genuine acts of kindness. In addition, staff were provided with raffle tickets to distribute when students were “caught” being kind, and some faculty members were even recognized for their own spirit of generosity.
Throughout the week, students actively reminded their peers and staff members about the importance of being kind.
“A student called me out for my tone not being kind,” recalled Ms. Kearney. “I thanked that student, because kindness is not always about words, it’s also about how you make someone feel.”
World Kindness Day Recognition and Raffle Prizes
On World Kindness Day, officially recognized on November 13, names were drawn for the raffle. As a result, this added an extra element of excitement and recognition for positive behavior. In a meaningful display of kindness, staff members who won chose to give their prizes to students.
“It was important to recognize students when they were caught in the act of kindness,” Ms. Gloria explained. “We wanted to help students make kindness a habit. Practice makes perfect, and every recognition helped reinforce that.”
Ending World Kindness Day on a Positive Note
To close the celebration, Ms. Kearney and Ms. Sanders provided cupcakes and candy bags for the entire school community.
The treats helped end the day on a positive note, serving as a reminder that kindness is an integral aspect of school culture at the High Road Academy of Prince George’s County.
