What began as an idea from three Excel Central students last fall has grown into a dynamic squad that fosters leadership, school spirit, and friendships. With the school’s basketball team already established, students Harmony, Syriah, and Kaniya saw an opportunity to introduce cheerleading – creating an environment where students could support each other and have fun.
Today, the squad consists of seven cheerleaders who have performed at two Excel Eagles games this season, showcasing impressive splits, kicks and formations.
To become a cheerleader at Excel Central, students must maintain good grades and strong attendance. Those on academic improvement aren’t eligible and the rules are very clear: miss practice and miss performing. The team is coached by Nequetta Alford, or “Ms. Que”, a dedicated math teacher and former high school cheerleader. Under her guidance, the cheerleaders not only improve their athletic skills, but also their grades and confidence. The girls admire how Ms. Que’s coaching style lets them take the lead while offering unwavering support and guidance.
“I love the positive energy, and most importantly, I love their connection,” said Ms. Que. “I’m excited for them because they get to build this experience together, and they are in a safe space.”
Cheer captains Kaniyah and Harmony create their own routines while also learning dances and stunts from social media platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube. But the squad isn’t just about cheering – it’s about camaraderie and personal growth. Some members joined because of a friend on the team – though nervous at first, they quickly found a sense of belonging. The captains also maintain a team group chat, ensuring communication and accountability.
As the team continues growing, so does its influence, turning cheerleaders into ambassadors of school pride. Whether performing for district visitors, pep rallies or games, the squad’s dedication and teamwork are evident, earning them plenty of recognition.
The team is actively recruiting more members, as a few seniors will graduate this spring. For students considering joining, the message is clear: it’s a commitment, but also an opportunity to build friendships, boost confidence, and become inspiring student leaders.
