Caleb, described by his mom, Shannan, as a bright and creative 9-year-old, is finding success at the High Road School of Fairfield County after facing significant challenges while enrolled in public school.
Diagnosed with autism, Caleb struggled to stay focused and required more one-on-one attention than his elementary school could provide. “The district was wonderful and really tried to support him,” said Shannan. “But despite their best efforts, they acknowledged Caleb needed a more personalized environment with additional staff and smaller classrooms.”
Since enrolling at High Road during the 2023-2024 school year, Caleb’s experience has been transformative. Initially, he faced a tough adjustment period, often asking his parents, “Why are you making me go to another school?” Yet, the welcoming atmosphere of High Road provided the support he needed. “It’s like a house,” said Shannan, noting the school’s colorful and comforting environment. “That, coupled with open communication from staff members, really helped make the transition as positive an experience as it could be for Caleb and our family.”
His journey at High Road has been marked by significant milestones. The staff’s dedication and tailored approach have allowed Caleb to become more engaged and focused with his schoolwork. Shannan was especially excited to see Caleb returning home with completed assignments – something that hadn’t happened previously. “I didn’t even know what his handwriting looked like,” she shared, expressing her happiness that Caleb now receives grades and recognition for his hard work.
For Shannan, knowing that Caleb is in capable hands has been a huge stress reliever. “Before my every waking thought when he was at school was, ‘I hope he is having a good day’, ‘I hope I don’t get a phone call’,” she said. “They know how to help him at High Road and that is a big relief.”
As Caleb continues making strides, Shannan praises the High Road team for their unwavering commitment to his success. “Teachers at this school put their heart and soul into it,” she said.
