Helping Your Child Transition from Summer: Tips for Parents to Reduce Back-to-School Anxiety

As summer ends, many parents deal with their child’s anxiety about returning to school. Transitioning from a relaxed summer schedule to a structured school environment can be challenging, especially for middle and high school students with emotional challenges. At NewHope Academy, we understand such transitional challenges. Here are some practical tips for parents to help reduce back-to-school anxiety and move towards a smooth start to the new school year.

  1. Gradually Reintroduce a Routine

In the weeks leading up to the start of school, gradually encourage a daily routine. Set consistent bedtimes and wake-up times to help your child prepare for early school mornings. Incorporate activities that mimic the school day, such as reading and designated mealtimes. At NewHope Academy, we emphasize the importance of routines throughout the year, helping students manage their schedules effectively and reduce anxiety.

  1. Open Communication

Encourage open communication about their feelings regarding the new school year with your child. Listen to their concerns and inform students that it’s normal to feel anxious. Be sure to listen to your child’s concerns without passing judgement. Share positive aspects of returning to school, such as seeing friends, engaging in favorite subjects, and participating in extracurricular activities. Remind students of their “why” behind going to school – what are their long-term goals and related values around school and academics?  Our clinical staff at NewHope Academy is trained to provide therapeutic support and create a safe space for students to express their concerns and anxieties.

  1. Establish a Homework Station

As the school year approaches, develop a dedicated homework station at home that is free from distractions and equipped with necessary supplies. Inform your child of this space. This helps your child develop a sense of organization and readiness for the academic demands of the school year. You can also develop a space at home where students go to when feeling flooded with difficult thoughts and feelings. This can be a space where students can engage in coping strategies. NewHope Academy, supports students in developing effective study habits and distress toleration and emotional regulation skills, which are critical for academic success and reducing anxiety.

  1. Encourage Social Connections

During the summer, encourage your child to reconnect with school friends as the school year starts. If your child is reluctant, have discussions with your child about their motivations and values around friendships. Remind your child of the interpersonal skills they have learned at school. NewHope Academy fosters a supportive community where students can build meaningful relationships and develop strong social skills, helping them feel more at ease in social settings.

  1. Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques

Teach your child mindfulness and relaxation techniques to manage anxiety. Deep breathing exercises, and present moment awareness can effectively reduce stress and promote a sense of calm. Remind your child that dwelling on the problems in the past or future can be unhelpful, and to try and return to the present moment. At NewHope Academy, we integrate mindfulness practices into our curriculum to help students develop coping strategies for managing stress and anxiety.

  1. Stay Positive and Supportive

Maintain a positive and supportive attitude towards the new school year. Celebrate small successes and provide encouragement and reassurance. Remind your child of their strengths and past achievements to boost their confidence.

Transitioning from summer to the school year can be a more smooth and positive experience with the right support and strategies. By gradually reintroducing routines, fostering open communication, and utilizing mindfulness techniques, parents can help reduce their child’s back-to-school anxiety.
