At just 14 years old, Kamren S. is a shining example of resilience, growth, and the difference the right school can make. Diagnosed with nonverbal autism, he recently completed eighth grade at Lexington Life Academy Gateway — a milestone that once seemed uncertain in a traditional school setting.

“He just wasn’t doing well,” his mom Jasmine C. said. “The public school system wasn’t made for him. We were constantly trying to make him fit a mold that didn’t fit who he was.”

That all changed when she heard about Lexington Life through word of mouth. After taking a tour, it was clear to her this was the right place.

“I knew instantly,” she said. “They made us feel so welcome. The staff really took the time to understand who Kamren is. They broke down the programs, explained what they had to offer, and how it could be personalized to fit his needs. Not every kid learns the same way, and Lex Life gets that.”

Now in his fourth year at the school, Kamren has made remarkable progress.

“He’s grown so much, academically and behaviorally,” she said. “The pandemic set him back quite a bit, but the team worked hard to get him back on track. His teachers never gave up on him.”

Kamren is advancing into high school-level classes and he’s on the path toward earning a diploma. “That’s huge for us,” his mom said with pride. “As a parent, I couldn’t be prouder. He’s not just catching up, he’s moving forward.”

The emotional support the family has received from the school has been just as vital as the academics.

“I’m a great mom, but I’m not a teacher,” she said. “They reset our journey. I don’t know where I’d be without them. Brandi A. has been by my side since day one. Ms. Marnie in the front office is my go-to. They’re not just staff, they’re family.”

His family has been able to keep him in the environment that’s helping him thrive with the help of the Empowerment Scholarship Account (ESA), which Kamren has received since his first day at the school.

Looking ahead, Jasmine says they plan to stay with Lexington Life for years to come. “They’ve given Kamren more than an education – they’ve given him a future. Jessica and her staff are truly inspirational, and we’re so thankful to be part of this community.”
