When Nikalas Campanello joined the High Road Schools of Hartford in 2024, he brought with him more than just training as a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) – he brought a deep, personal drive to help students overcome challenges and realize their potential.
“I had stuff going on when I was growing up,” Campanello said. “I knew I wanted to help people, but I didn’t know how. Once I discovered the world of behavior analysis, I realized I could support students in becoming more independent and successful in their everyday lives.”
Named a 2025 Regional Staff of the Year winner in Specialized Education Services, Inc.’s Teacher and Staff of the Year program, Campanello works across multiple classrooms, partnering closely with teachers, therapists, and families to support students’ behavioral and academic growth. His approach is individualized and rooted in building strong, respectful relationships with students.
“The culture in Hartford is really special,” Campanello said. “You have to establish rapport with the students before you can help guide them. Once you do, you can start to see real progress.”
That progress is evident. Under Campanello’s guidance, students with frequent behavioral challenges have significantly reduced incidents, increased classroom engagement, and in some cases, transitioned back to their district schools. One student who once spent most of her day sleeping now accesses her academics regularly thanks to a tailored reinforcement plan.

Jennifer Johnson, regional director for High Road Schools of Connecticut and B.E.S.T. Academy, credits Campanello with driving positive outcomes through collaboration and compassion. “Nik works across schools, helping students decrease maladaptive behaviors and build their confidence,” she said. “His dedication and sense of humor make him a tremendous asset to our team.”
Though he downplays personal accolades, Campanello says the Staff of the Year recognition affirmed that others see the impact he’s making. “I’m hard on myself, so it meant a lot. It tells me I’m doing something right.”
When asked why a district should consider High Road Schools, Campanello didn’t hesitate: “Because we care. This is a supportive environment full of people who want to see students grow, succeed, and get the consistency and structure they need.”
