In honor of World Autism Month, students and staff at FCS Peak Academy Union City came together to spread kindness and support for students with autism at a local high school.
On April 2nd —World Autism Awareness Day—students assembled 50 goody bags filled with a variety of small but thoughtful items. The bags included fidgets, keychains, sensory items and encouraging stickers and notes. These meaningful gifts were carefully chosen to bring comfort and create a sense of connection by showing the recipients they are seen and supported.
“Engaging students in this activity was so important because it not only helped raise awareness about autism but also encouraged empathy and inclusivity within the school,” said India Fugerson, support services coordinator. “By creating and giving out the goody bags, the students had the chance to actively participate in supporting their peers with autism. It was a great way to build a sense of community, where everyone felt like they were part of something meaningful.”
The following day, students and staff delivered the goody bags to the high school students, making for a heartwarming experience.
To continue the celebration, both students and staff wore blue shirts—a symbolic color to support the cause. The sea of blue throughout the school served as a sense of unity and solidarity within the community as everyone came together, promoting inclusion.
