Students and staff from the Achieve Academy of Harrisburg recently had the exciting opportunity to visit the Turkey Hill Experience in Lancaster County, an interactive attraction where guests can learn about ice cream making and sample products. They enjoyed unlimited samples of iced tea, lemonade and 15 flavors of ice cream, all while learning about the brand’s history. For some students, this was their first ever field trip, making the experience even more memorable.

“The students and staff had a blast learning and participating in hands-on activities related to farming and in the dairy production process,” said Grace Carson, M.Ed. principal and instructional specialist, Achieve Academy of Harrisburg.

The kids explored the ice cream-making process, discovering the different types of flavoring, add-ins and swirls that can be added into an ice cream base. As a special highlight, they participated in the Taste Lab, a 45-minute ice cream-making session where they created their own unique flavors. Each participant was given a pint of ice cream to customize however they liked.

For student DeAndre, the highlight of the day was “driving” the dairy truck which made cow sounds when he pressed the pedal. Kaleb loved going down the slides, while Braheem enjoyed learning how to milk a cow and make a commercial.

By the end of the trip, both students and staff had not only learned a lot but also indulged in plenty of sweet treats.

“Seeing the smiles on each of the kids’ faces made my day,” Carson said. “Life is short – eat dessert first!”
