The High Road School of Darien is dedicated to helping elementary school-aged students with autism and behavioral challenges, grow academically, socially, and emotionally. Rico’s journey is a testament to that commitment.

Earlier this school year, 6-year-old Rico arrived as a nonverbal, overwhelmed first-grader. While High Road was a welcomed change for his family because it meant Rico no longer had an hour commute to and from school, it was a tough adjustment for him, often crying, kicking and struggling to communicate. But with time, patience, structur, and support from the dedicated staff, including a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) and an Occupational Therapist, he slowly found his footing.

A turning point came during the school’s Thanksgiving meal when Rico, for the first time, responded verbally, lighting up at the offer of macaroni and cheese. From there, his progress took off. With a teacher specializing in autism support, he gained communication and computer skills, became more engaged in learning.

He even showed empathy, once offering a distressed classmate a puppy stuffed animal, saying, “Here’s your puppy. You’ll feel better.”

Today, Rico participates more in class and comes home in a good mood – something for which his mother, a single parent, is incredibly grateful. With the bus ride to school only taking 10 minutes, his attendance has improved significantly and his mother is so happy with his progress that she enrolled Rico’s younger sister in the school’s kindergarten program.

“Rico’s transformation has been amazing to witness,” said School Director Jolene Delany. “He’s a completely different child than when he first arrived – more confident, communicative, and engaged. We are proud to be a much-needed resource for families seeking specialized education.”

By providing the right environment close to home, High Road School of Darien is helping students like Rico thrive – one step at a time.
