At NewHope Academy, a school dedicated to supporting twice exceptional students, creativity flourishes thanks to the efforts of teachers Sara Wodarski and Cassidy Aragon. The duo established a vibrant arts and crafts class and club that not only nurtures artistic skills but also fosters collaboration and community spirit among students.
The extracurricular advanced crafting class offers students a unique opportunity to explore advanced crafting techniques during the school day in a studio-like atmosphere. With up to eight students per class, the teachers create an engaging environment where kids dive into various mediums, including 3D printing, sewing, fashion design, and Cricut machine created stickers. It serves as a haven for students looking to express themselves creatively and develop new skills.
“Art pushes students to think in different ways,” said Wodarski, who studied art education and ceramics at Illinois State University. “There’s no right or wrong answer – each student brings their personal perspective, building their confidence and fostering a love for expressiveness.”
One of the standout initiatives of the class is a partnership with the senior students. The teachers are helping students design and sell T-shirts featuring the NewHope logo to raise funds for the seniors’ trip. This project not only promotes school spirit but also empowers students to take ownership of their fundraising efforts, blending artistry with real-world business skills.
In addition to the class, the after-school arts club is equally popular, with enthusiastic members expanding on what they learn during the day. This collaborative space encourages innovation and imagination among students.
After three years at NewHope, Aragon, the school’s Spanish teacher, has seen firsthand how transformative the realm of art can be, especially for students who struggle to communicate verbally.
“Art gives them a voice,” she said. “It’s rewarding to see them make connections, showcase their talents and express themselves in ways they never thought possible.”
A highlight of the club is the use of the Cricut machine, a versatile device that allows students to create custom designs for various projects. From cutting vinyl for T-shirts to drawing designs on iPads and applying them to backpacks, the Cricut opens up a world of possibilities for originality.
“It’s incredible to see what the students can create,” Wodarski added. “They’re not just making things; they’re developing skills that can benefit them in many ways.”
The club is more than just a space for creativity; it’s a supportive community where students learn to respect and understand one another.
“Our students are mature and respectful, and they recognize when someone needs a moment,” Aragon shared. “This nurturing environment allows every student to find their place and express themselves freely.”
Through collaboration and community involvement, the teachers are helping students thrive not only as artists, but also as individuals. Their dedication to fostering a love for creativity paves the way for a bright future at NewHope Academy.
